Around 35 years have passed since the first Senegalese migrants came to Austria, bringing with them a part of Senegalese culture and way of life. Among them were a number of artists, such as the percussion group “Tam Tam d’Áfrique”, who made a name for themselves in the Austrian music scene very early on.

To this day, more young ambitious artists from Senegal are coming to Austria to present a piece of Senegalese culture. In 2005, some of these talented artists formed the group “Tily-boo” with the aim of publicizing their art and culture in Austria and beyond.

The name “Tily-boo” translates as “sunrise” and symbolizes the new broader horizon and a bright friendly future of Senegalese-Austrian relations. The group is not only able to tell the stories of their country through rousing rhythms of various West African instruments and dynamic dances, but also to inspire many people for “Tily-boo” and their music. Tily-Boo’s lineup is full of enthusiastic artists who are involved with traditional African dance and rhythms, but also with modern interpretations.

Folklore performances by “Tily Boo”:

Call of the TamTam
First means of communication and message transmission.

Casamance by moonlight
These are wrestling ceremonies and traditional dance performances. They take place after abundant agricultural harvests. First, two strong wrestlers compete against each other, then two resistance dances of the Diola-Fogni ethnic group are performed: The “Djinöb” and the “Bugör”.

Dance of the “Kumpo”
The “Kumpo” is a protective spirit of the Diola and Mandinka ethnic groups in Casamance. Before the rainy season begins, the villagers gather in the village square. The “Kumpo” dance is performed to ask for plenty of rain and at the same time to summon evil spirits.

The Manoj dance
The Manoj are an ethnic group. They live on the border between Guinea Bissau and Senegal. Among the Manoj, the groom must give his bride an adult bull before the wedding. He is supposed to steal this bridal gift in the neighboring villages to prove his courage and strength.
